More About Jessica

Jessica is an avid “mover” with a background in ballet, modern, and African. She received her BA in Rhetoric from UC Berkeley.

After the birth of her son and an intransigent dance injury, she began to rebuild her body and stamina via the Pilates method. She went on to receive her formal training at the Ellie Herman Studio, and certified through the Pilates Method Alliance. Jessica has studied extensively with Lizz Roman, learning rehabilitation techniques based on the principles of Vlademir Janda. In 2009 she received her certification in the Hendrickson Method of Orthopedic Massage and Manual Therapy.

History of Pilates

Pilates is a system of movement and exercise developed by the German-born athlete and physical therapy pioneer Joseph Hubertus Pilates. Pilates educates, repatterns, realigns and balances the body, promoting maximum muscle strength while increasing flexibility.

Pilates strengthens the innermost abdominal layers and develops pelvic stability, relieving the lower back of its workload and significantly decreasing back pain. Pilates also decompresses the joints to stimulate and improve circulation. The combination of enhanced circulation, increased strength, broadened range of motion and more balanced musculature promotes healthy tissue and precise, efficient movement patterns.

By developing both body and mind, Pilates trains you to move with economy, grace, and balance. You learn to hold yourself in proper alignment, using your body to its greatest advantage, making the most of its strengths, counteracting weaknesses, and correcting imbalances.

Pilates will:

  • Reduce stress
  • Provide abdominal awareness, strength and control
  • Create a support system for the lower back
  • Enhance flexibility
  • Elongate muscle tone
  • Improve posture and gait cycle
